Future Ancestor moves in to the Shaw Neighborhood

A curated vintage furniture shop has a new home

After three years on Cherokee street, Future Ancestor just relocated to Shaw neighborhood.

"It nods to the modern and the vintage that we sell. Future represents modern. Ancestor represents vintage," owner Julia Leenig said.

Julia calls the style you'll find at her curated furniture shop "collected modern."

"Anywhere from the 30s to maybe the 70s and then also contemporary, current for our new items," she said.

When you mix old with new, you get the style she's referring to.

"This is a mid century sofa but we layer it with new Turkish kilim pillow and this handmade block print pillow.

The pillows use fabric that has a story.

"The pillows are made from vintage Turkish rugs but have been cleaned and have new packing and fillers," she said.

Vintage finds come from estate sales or customers bring things in.

"We like minimalist style, we're always quality over quantity. So we're super particular about the vintage that comes in," Julia said.

Midcentury modern dressers are always in stock because of their popularity, along with chairs.

"We're always looking for chairs. My husband and I both love different chairs and I feel like quality design really comes across in chairs," she said.

These terra cotta airplant hangers add the perfect touch to a blank wall.

"One of best sellers at our other store so we had to bring them here," she said.

The new store in the Shaw neighborhood is twice as big as their Cherokee shop.

"I think we did 40 gallons of white paint in this space. We painted the celing, floors, walls," she said.

The ceiling, walls, and floors is just about the only thing Future Ancestor has covered up.

"Occasionally, we'll restore a dresser and paint part of the doors or something but usually, no, just restore it to its original glory," she said.

Future Ancestor is located at 4100 Shenandoah Avenue.

The number is (314) 201-2359.
