Girl in viral video gets new prosthetic leg

The president of A Step Ahead Prosthetics said Emma changed lives for so many people that he wanted to give back to her.

Emma Bennett is walking now like never before, wearing shoes she never dreamed of putting on.

You might remember the viral video from last month in which a 10-year-old girl was overwhelmed at getting an American Girl doll with a prosthetic leg like hers.

On Tuesday, we caught up with Emma after the company that made the leg for her doll made one for her, too.

The president of the company -- A Step Ahead Prosthetics -- told KHOU 11 News the new $40,000 leg is more high tech than her old one and will allow her to live life without limitation.

The company also gave Emma and her family another reason to smile with a trip to the Big Apple.

"Someone all the way on the other side of the country saw me and they thought I was special," Emma said.

A Step Ahead saw the heartwarming video that's been viewed more than 37 million times and were so moved by Emma's reaction, they decided to fly her and her family in to New York. All of them were visiting the city for the first time.

"They were so nice to take their time and money to fly me from Texas to New York and make this a million dollar leg for me," Emma said. "This cost more than a car, my mom said."

Emma and her family -- with her high-tech leg in tow -- also got to do a few other firsts, including riding a train, taking a taxi and going to the American Girl store.

"The American Girl store is so much bigger than the one in Houston," Emma said.

Emma was treated like a princess for a day at the store. She was overjoyed by the store and the doll that brought her such emotion in the first place.

Emma is an amputee who lost her leg as a baby due to a congenital birth defect.
