Married 80 years, Cleburne couple’s love stands the test of time

They’ve been together ever since a game of hide-and-seek when they were just six years old.

Last week, at a rather unremarkable farmhouse in Cleburne, was the most remarkable celebration.

Lois and B.E. Thompson, who are both 98, celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary.

B.E., who is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s, married Lois when they were 18.

“I would do it all over again,” Lois said.

But in reality, they’ve been together ever since a game of hide-and-seek when they were just six years old.

“I hid behind the dresser,” Lois said. “Somehow he hid there too and he kissed me on the cheek and asked me if I’d be his girl. And I was from then on.”

They married in 1937, during the Great Depression and before World War II. They don't even have pictures from that day because photography was still a luxury reserved for the rich.

Lois says they had plenty of bumps along the way, but what’s kept them together is showing love no matter what.

“He never left without telling me he loved me,” Lois said.

“Sometimes it’s a little embarrassing how loving they are,” said the Thompson’s oldest daughter, Joy Crecelies.

That love has spawned four children, 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Lois eventually left her husband’s bedside to join the party, but only for a moment because there was only one place she wanted to be.

“I’ll be right here,” she told B.E. as she sat by his bedside. “I’m not going anywhere.”

It may seem impossible after 80 years to still love someone as much as you did when you met. And in fact, Lois says it is.

“More. I love him more. And I’m not ready to see the end," she said.

Love is never easy, but Lois and B.E. have shown us how wonderful it can be when we vow to never stop trying.

“I love you too,” Lois told B.E. “I love you.”
