UNDATED (KTHV) – It’s happening folks.

According to a blog post by Instagram, the photo sharing social media platform announced that it will switch to an algorithm-ordered feed in the coming months.

Instagram says in their post, “You may be surprised to learn that people miss on average 70 percent of their feeds. As Instagram has grown, it’s become harder to keep up with all the photos and videos people share.”

The order of photos and videos in a person’s feed will be based on the likelihood the user will be interested in the content, the user’s relationship to the person, and the timeliness of the post.

Instagram added that for now, they are just optimizing the order of posts, meaning all posts will still show up on the user’s feed, just in a different order.

This is a growing trend in social media as Facebook has used an algorithm-controlled newsfeed for much of its existence. Twitter has also begun to experiment with a similar style of newsfeed rather than one based on reverse chronological order.

Do you like the idea of an algorithm-sorted Instagram feed, or do you prefer the current reverse chronological layout? Let us know on social media.
