When Missy went missing, more than a pet was lost. The family in Colorado says she was meant as a companion animal for their daughter with special needs.

HILLSBORO, Mo. (KSDK) - Strangers will soon help reunite a girl with special needs with her companion dog after the dog was found more than 800 miles from home in Jefferson County, Missouri.

"Missy" was picked up as a stray near Hillsboro Monday. Animal control workers found an ID chip with outdated information, but two local women are determined to reunite the dog with her owners.

Brandi Cross found the family in Colorado and Melissa Morton is planning to drive "Missy" there this week.

“They do have two children who are special needs so travel for them is not easy,” says Morton of the family she plans to meet in person over the weekend.

Seems a lot of people are getting involved in helping this dog and her family. The county executive stepped in and waived fees from animal control and the local Enterprise office donated a rental car for ten dollars a day.
