ST. LOUIS – Usually, every weekday on "Today in St. Louis" we feature a pet for adoption on our Sammy's Stars segment. On Wednesdays, we feature pets from the APA of Missouri, but they couldn't come this week because of a big expansion project.

The APA brought NewsChannel 5 inside for a look at the renovations. They're improving the layout of the lobby, adding new visitation rooms, and a high-tech classroom. It also hopes to make improvements outside to help them stand out along Hanley Road, which could ultimately lead to more adoptions.

"We recognize that folks couldn't find us, they would pass us all the time on the road. By going up two stories and turning 45 degrees to the north, we're now much more accessible visibly," said

Work should be complete by the end of October.

In the meantime, the APA is hosting its 24th annual Canine Carnival Sunday, Oct. 5 at Tilles Park in Ladue. Last year, NewsChannel 5's Pat McGonigle and Jennifer Blome were named king and queen of the pooch parade. Pat will be back there again this year, along with Nichole Berlie, Kelly Jackson, and Julie Tristan.

Speaking of Jennifer Blome, she's the subject of Thursday's Hey Heidi segment. Heidi went to visit her at the APA to show viewers how Jennifer is adjusting to her new job and normal sleeping hours.
