ST. LOUIS - Good Samaritans rushed to a man’s aid after he was shot during an attempted carjacking in the Tower Grove South neighborhood on Monday.

Police tell 5 On Your Side the incident happened in the 3900 block of Wyoming around 4 p.m. The surveillance video 5 On Your Side obtained from a resident shows a man walking to his car when suddenly a car described as a white Toyota Camry pulls up beside him. Someone hopped out of that car, pulled out a gun and demanded the man's keys. He tried to run away and when he did, the would-be carjacker shot him twice before speeding off.

"Heard one gun shot that set me off in needing to know what was going on," said Stephen Vulysteke, a nearby resident who came out to help.

Witnesses said it was a disturbing and frightening situation.

"I think this was a couple of guys who saw an opportunity with a guy who most likely had some money in his pocket or a car they wanted," said Vulysteke. "They were desperate."

Despite the risks, good Samaritans came to the man's aid. Vulysteke called 911.

"By the time I actually got to the victim, when he was laying there. There were three people giving him medical attention. And I think it may have saved his life," Vulysteke said.

The video shows one of them trying to control the victim's bleeding before police and EMS arrived.

“They didn’t have to do that,” he said. “They could have done like so many people would do today is lock their doors and stay in their house. It's awesome that I live in the neighborhood where there is people that will come out and put themselves in possibly harms way.”

The victim is in stable condition. No arrests have been made.
