South City woman finds intruder standing over her bed

She noticed the man had rummaged through both of her nightstands. At the moment she woke up, she noticed him going through her purse.

A south St. Louis woman made a frightening discovery in her own home: she woke up to an intruder standing at the foot of her bed.

The victim, Amanda Helms, told 5 On Your Side the intruder broke into her basement where she sleeps when she works nights. The intruder took a couple of small items including her cigarettes, a taser and between $20 and $30 in cash.

Helms recounted how she believes the intruder entered her Benton Park apartment early Tuesday morning.

“So, I think he actually came through the alley,” she explained.

“And then down these steps….they came through here,” as Helms walked through the basement door.

Helms said she was doing some construction. The frame of her door had been knocked off. So, the door was slightly ajar, allowing the man to make his way into her home.

“And when I woke up, they were crouched down here at the end of my bed,” Helms said.

She said she noticed the man had rummaged through her nightstands. At the moment she woke up, he was going through her purse.

“Then I said, ‘Who is that, who is that,’ and I never saw his face and then he walked out."

Helms called out to the intruder, who she said quickly tip-toed out of her basement.

“How could someone be so bold to come into their house while they're sleeping, go through their drawers, right next to their bed and then be at the foot of the bed,” said Helms.

The intruder did not make off with much. But, what he left behind, feelings of shock, Helms said.

“It could have been a lot worse,” she said. “And I don’t want this to happen to anyone else."

St. Louis Police said there have not been any other break-ins like this one in the area.
