Toddler shot, man killed in shooting near the Eads Bridge

The child was sitting in the man's lap in the passenger seat of the car when they were both shot.

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. - A man is dead and a 2-year-old injured after being shot while in a vehicle near the Eads Bridge Wednesday night. Police tell 5 On Your Side a woman was driving the vehicle at the time of the shooting, but she was not hurt.

According to Illinois State Police, the shooting occurred near the Eads Bridge and River Park Drive around 11 p.m. The car was stopped at a red light when an "unknown SUV" pulled up on the passenger side and a suspect began firing into the vehicle, hitting the man in the passenger's seat and the 2-year-old child in his lap.

After the shooting, the woman sped away and crashed her vehicle.

Police say the man was pronounced dead on scene, but wouldn't elaborate on the condition of the woman or the 2-year-old.

Police do not have identifying information about the suspect or the SUV, but say it appears the victim was targeted that he and the suspect knew each other.

Another vehicle in the intersection at the time was hit, but nobody was hurt.

Investigators went to a house on Bowman Avenue in East St. Louis shortly after leaving the shooting scene, but it is unclear how that location is related to this crime.
