Rob Johnes, president of Helmkamp Construction, has acquired the 80-year-old construction company, making him the first non-family member to assume ownership of the company.

Johnes, who started with the company as an intern, completed the long-term buyout of the firm from Brad Farrell, the founder’s grandson. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“I plan to do some new things while not losing what has made Helmkamp great for the past 80 years,” Johnes said. “I am deeply honored to lead an organization with such great history and a group of employers who are dedicated to safety, quality, clients and each other.”

Johnes received a bachelor’s degree in construction management from Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville and joined Helmkamp for an internship in 1997. Johnes then worked as a project manager and was appointed vice president in 2006.
