Lizella man puts casket outside to scare thieves

One man in Lizella, who's been burglarized twice, says the thieves stopped coming after he placed a casket outside.

There are many ways to deter thieves from your property. Some people use alarm systems, others use dogs.

One man in Lizella, who's been burglarized twice, says the thieves stopped coming after he placed a casket outside.

"If you don't have any business coming out here, don't come out here. If I catch somebody up on my property messing with my things, then I'll take things into my own hands," said Darryl Smith.

He's fed up with thieves snooping around the land he farms and camps on. In August, trespassers took off with nearly $10,000 worth of his stuff, including guns.

"They cut the lock, the hinges that were on the lock," said Smith.

In September, thieves returned again, and Smith vowed it would be the last time he got violated. So he began preparing for the next burglar's burial.

"Yes I actually went to the casket store in Macon, Georgia, and bought one," said Smith.

The $800 he spent on his unique security device, he says has paid off.

"It's worth it, I haven't had anybody come out here since then," said Smith.

He says some people have reported him to the Sheriff's office, but unless there is a dead body in the casket, what he's doing is legal.

"I'm defending myself and my family property," said Smith.

He's not just depending on the casket keeping intruders away. He's installed surveillance cameras around, and now building a more secure storage unit.

Though police have not arrested the burglars, Smith says he's still on the hunt, and we he finds them, he will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.

Some of the items stolen include two shot guns, a rifle, deer cams, and a generator.

Anyone with information should call the Sheriff's office at 478-751-7500
