GRANITE CITY, Ill. – An American Steel employee died in an industrial accident on Thursday.

Emergency crews responded to American Steel Foundry at 1700 Walnut Street in Granite City, Illinois where it was reported an employee was seriously injured.

Roy L. Evans, 54, of Carrolton, Illinois was transported to a hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The Granite City Police Department is investigating the incident and the Madison County Coroner’s Office will be conducting an autopsy on Friday to determine the cause of death. OSHA has been notified as well, police said.

‘The Granite City Police Department would like to extend our condolences to the family of Mr. Evans for their loss,’ police said in a press release.

An OSHA spokesperson said Evans was crushed when a stack of skids collapsed. Skids are metal frames that weigh 2,000 pounds each.
