Anonymous donor returns what Metro East thieves stole

A nameless hero showed up Tuesday morning.

It’s a Christmas miracle in the Metro East.

On Monday, 5 on Your Side did a report about a thief who stole Christmas trees from a lot in Wood River, Ill.

The money from those trees helps support a number of good causes.

And after our story aired, the Christmas spirit was on display in the best way.

Floyd Alexander's been selling Christmas trees in the lot off East Edwardsville Road for years.

“We raise money for the Shriners hospital,” said Alexander.

Part of his job as president of the Alt-Wood Shrine Club is to make sure the club is raising enough money to support itself and the charities it gives to.

“We're about children, mainly," he said.

So, when Alexander learned Sunday morning someone had stolen six trees off the lot, totaling around $300, he said he was hurt.

“The people who done this, I don't know if you can describe them," he said.

But that pain quickly went away when a nameless hero showed up Tuesday morning.

“He said he seen it on Channel 5. He came over and brought $300 and didn't want to tell us his name. He's anonymous," said Alexander.

The money will go back into the Shrine Club's coffers to help pay for charity fundraisers.

Alexander said he's seen lots of generosity over the years, but this act of kindness won't be forgotten.

“Because people like you, I just can't explain them. They're just good people, good-hearted people," he said.
