Baby undergoes life-saving surgery 6 days after being born

Ben Decker, was born with his arteries in the wrong place. Ben had open heart-surgery six days after he was born.

ST. LOUIS - A family is struggling to pay their medical bills after their baby boy undergoes a life-saving surgery.

SSM Cardinal Glennon Children Medical Center’s Dr. Charles Huddleston says only about five children are born with this heart condition each year in the Greater St. Louis region.

The baby, Ben Decker, was born with his arteries in the wrong place. Ben had open heart-surgery six days after he was born.

His parents are grateful he's recovering at home, but now they're trying to make arrangements to pay off the $17,000 in medical costs that their insurance doesn't cover.

Ben’s dad is a warehouse manager and his wife is staying home to take care of Ben. The baby still has to see specialists to monitor his heart condition. If you would like to help the Dittmer family, click here.
