Berkeley man accused in toddler’s death taken into custody

The United States Marshall's Fugitive Task Force took 24-year-old Gyasi Campbell into custody on Dec. 28. Police have been searching for Campbell for several weeks.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY – The man who has been charged in connection with the death of a toddler has been taken into custody in Cahokia, Illinois.

The United States Marshall's Fugitive Task Force took 24-year-old Gyasi Campbell into custody on Dec. 28. Police have been searching for Campbell for several weeks.

2-year-old Kane Friess died from head trauma on April 14. Campbell has been charged with first degree murder. He had been living with Kane's mother at the time.

Campbell is being held at the St. Clair County Jail.

“We thank the Marshall's for their efforts in locating Campbell and are happy to have him off the streets. At this point we leave his fate to the justice system, and hope that the family of little Kane can rest easier knowing Campbell is in custody,” Sheriff Watson said in a press release.
