Card skimmer steals information at Chesterfield gas station

"I was surprised at how well it blended in with the pin pad. It literally just lays over the top and you can't notice that it's there," said Trevor Matthews, a manager at the gas station.

CHESTERFIELD, Mo. — Police are trying to determine how a credit card skimmer ended up on a card machine inside a gas station.

Employees at the Circle K Gas Station at Chesterfield Parkway and Olive found the device May 18th and immediately called authorities.

Trevor Matthews, the station manager, said he was checking around their card reader when he felt something strange.

“It felt weird, pulled it, [the skimmer] came right off,” he said.

Skimmers are devices that grab your data off your credit or debit card without you evening knowing. They’re also very hard to see, making them even harder to find.

That’s something Matthews experienced firsthand. “I was surprised at how well it blended in with the pin pad. It literally just lays over the top and you can’t notice that it’s there,” he said.

Sgt. Keith Rider with the Chesterfield Police Department recommends checking all credit card holders before using them, look for mismatched color and make sure the reader fits properly on the rest of the device. He also recommends keeping a close eye on your account and call your bank with any questions.
