Chihuahua on 375 mile journey for hospice

When you are 1 foot tall and just 16 pounds, it takes a lot of steps to get from point “A” to point “B”.

A Chihuahua from Sacramento is about to take the walk of his life. 375 miles on rugged trails from North Lake Tahoe to Point Reyes Sea Shore.

Hachi “The Wonder Dog” is the pups name and he is not doing it for exercise.

“He is a trail dog but Hachi is also a therapy dog.” said Jeff Douglas, a chaplin at advanced hospice. He and Hachi help people live out the remaining days of their life. The two are walking to make people aware of the option of hospice.

Over the next 25 days, 63-year-old Douglas and 5-year-old Hachi will be winding through wicked terrain on the American Discovery Trail. They will be promoting hospice care on their Facebook page.

“Almost every insurance covers hospice. Medicare covers hospice. It allows people to live the remainder of their life the way they want,” Douglas said. He wants everyone he meets on his journey to know that you don’t have to die in hospital alone.

You can follow his progress on an real time GPS map.
