Fire displaces family of 14

Tuesday morning, fire gutted a three-story house that was home to three generations.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ill. - A family of 14 escaped a fire with nothing but the clothes they had on and now they have no place to call home.

It happened in Fayetteville, Illinois about 35 miles east of St. Louis.

Tuesday morning, fire gutted a three-story house that was home to three generations.

Now, Angela Dayton, her daughters, and grandchildren are living out of two motel rooms.

The say the home wasn't insured and emergency money from the Red Cross will run out before the end of the week.

"My daughters all live with me and I help them take care of their children," says Dayton. "It's terrible that they have no home to go to, nowhere to lay their head at night time."

One family member was burned rescuing his young son from the fire but he's out of the hospital and everyone else made it out safely.

One of the girl's teachers at Freeburg High School is holding a meet up to collect donations for the family at the Belleville YMCA, Thursday at 5 p.m.

Local firefighters say they are still investigating the cause of the fire but the family suspects a space heater on the second floor.
