Firefighters rescue 2 puppies from burned apartment unit

One firefighter said he can't believe the puppies survived.

ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis man is being hailed a hero after rescuing two women from a burning building near Hodiamont and Suburban Avenues Tuesday night.

The fire broke out around 10 p.m. in a three-story apartment building.

13 hours later, firefighters went back to check the units that were destroyed. In one of them, they discovered two 12-week-old puppies in a carrier.

One firefighter said he can’t believe the puppies survived. The carrier was covered in soot, which lead the rescue crews to think the puppies were there during the fire.

Both puppies were taken to the Humane Society of Missouri in St. Louis

“There’s a little bit of inflammation in the nose of one of them which is not unusual for how much soot they were exposed to,” said Dr. Julie Brinker Veterinarian for Humane Society of Missouri.

The Humane Society is hoping to reunite the puppies with their owners. If they’re unable to contact them, then they’ll be put up for adoption.
