St. Louis celebrated its biggest birthday celebration Saturday, at least, if size means anything.
Fifty-two years ago, St. Louisans gathered along the Missouri River in downtown St. Louis to witness something tailor-made for a city of its own -- the final piece of the Gateway Arch.
Every year, the workers who helped build the iconic landmark reunite each year to commemorate the accomplishment. Jack Wright and Gerald Rains are among those workers, both of whom worked on the Gateway Arch while still in college.
Rain went into teaching after graduation, including roles as Edwardsville High School and Belleville East High School's principals, while Wright stayed in engineering, later in life working on several big architectural projects throughout his career.
The Gateway Arch was partially constructed amid the construction of Busch Stadium II from 1964 to 1966.
