ST. LOUIS – Members of the community are asking for people to help name a new Midtown district that connects SLU’s north and south campuses.

The new mixed-use district is bounded by Laclede Avenue to the north, Chouteau Avenue to the south, Grand Boulevard to the east, and Vandeventer and Spring Avenues to the west.

Voting will be open from March 1-12. If you don’t like any of the four names, you can write in a suggestion.

Option 1: Prospect Yards

At the turn of the 20th century, the area west of Grand was known as the “Prospect Industrial District” and was home to many businesses and an extensive rail yard.

Option 2: The 1818

Eighteen rail lines used to run under the Grand bridge, connecting St. Louis to the nation. In addition, 1818 is Saint Louis University’s founding year.

Option 3: The Circuit

This name hearkens back to the area’s rail yard history and acknowledges the prominence of power lines there today.

Option 4: The GRID

Short for the “Grand Rail Innovation District,” this acronym represents the area’s location, historic rail lines and bright future.

“With the recent addition of two new residence halls at Saint Louis University and construction underway for a new SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital and outpatient care center, we’re seeing renewed rejuvenation and investment in the area,” said Brooks Goedeker, executive director of the St. Louis Midtown Redevelopment Corporation.

Several projects are under developing for the district, including the City Foundry STL, Element by Westin Hotel and revitalization of the historic Armory building.

The name of the district will be announced March 20.
