'I just couldn't believe it' | Neighbors react after 3 people killed, 2 injured in north city shooting

The shooting happened around 9 p.m. Monday.

ST. LOUIS — Neighbors say gun violence is not new to their north city neighborhood, but a shooting where 3 people were killed and 2 others injured is definitely out of the ordinary.

"I just couldn't believe it right here in the neighborhood, across the street. I just couldn't believe it," said Ethel Beck, a next door neighbor.

In the daylight, it's hard to picture it. This street, this home, the site of a triple homicide.

"I saw one bagged up but the other two they had put them in the truck, I guess 'cause I stood there and waited until they went back in the house. It took them a good while and then they came back out with another one," Beck said.

The shooting happened around 9 p.m. Monday. The crime scene was only steps away from Beck's home.

"I heard something say ping, and I didn't know what it was so I just kept sitting there and then I saw the lights flashing outside through the door and it was full of police," Beck said.

Beck soon learned that the ping she heard hit closer to home than she originally thought. It was a bullet piercing clear through her side door.

"When I looked at the door I saw that hole where that glass broke," Beck said.

The shooting took place inside "Hayden's Rectangle," a portion of St. Louis where the chief pledged to focus crime-fighting resources starting in 2018.

"Well, I can't say that there's been any changes, I haven't noticed any changes in our neighborhood. So other than that I can only speak for my neighborhood," another neighbor said.

5 On Your Side spoke with a woman who has called this street home for more than 30 years.

For safety reasons she did not want to be on camera but said this neighborhood will never be the same.

"Every time I look over there, I just think about those people who were killed, and it's bothered me," she said.
