EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — All lanes of northbound Interstate 55 near mile marker 24 have reopened after an accident involving an Illinois State Police trooper.
Edwardsville police said the accident took place at around 1:20 p.m. inside a construction zone.
Police said a 76-year-old man was driving southbound on I-55 when he suffered a medical emergency and drove into the back of a trooper's vehicle. The man was flown by medical helicopter to a local hospital where he later died.
The officer, a 27-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries and was taken to an area hospital.
