Man charged after shooting at Bellefontaine Neighbors police officers

Jason Cook, 37, has been charged with two counts of first degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY - A man has been charged after shooting at two police officers in north St. Louis County on Thursday.

Jason Cook, 37, has been charged with two counts of first degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action.

On Thursday morning, Cook fired shots at two Bellefontaine Neighbors police officers and then barricaded himself inside a home for several hours.

A St. Louis County police spokesperson says both officers were shot in their torsos and they had bulletproof vests on. They were both taken to a local hospital where they were later released.

“When a bullet hits the chest even though it doesn't penetrate the skin, it still could cause damage internally, so as of right now they are expected to survive. They are going through testing just to make sure nothing internally happened with that round hitting them."

The officers have been identified as a 44-year-old man who has been with the department for eight years and a 25-year-old woman who has been with the department for three years.

Around 2:45 p.m., the Tactical Operations Unit went into the home and found Cook suffering from at least one gunshot wound to the upper body. He was transported to a hospital for treatment and taken into custody.

Two handguns were recovered from the home.

He's being held on a $150,000 cash-only bond.
