CAHOKIA, Ill. – Two men were able to walk away from a helicopter crash at St. Louis Downtown Airport in Cahokia Monday.

According to officials, a two-seater helicopter crashed this morning. The helicopter was owned by Midwest Helicopter Training Academy, which is based at the airport. The men inside were a student and teacher at the academy.

Two men were injured and their injuries appear to be minor, according to Mike Mavrogeorge, the fire chief at the St. Louis Downtown Airport Fire Department. The chief said the helicopter only went 50 feet into the air before the crash. He said the men were shaken up by the crash, but feeling lucky to be alive.

"They are very lucky they weren't injured more seriously," he said, "and having their restraints systems on their bodies at that time significantly improved the outcome."

We do not know the cause of the crash yet. Federal investigators will be working on that and we will get info when it becomes available.
