CAHOKIA, Ill. - A new adult store is causing controversy in Cahokia, and it hasn’t even opened its doors.
"That's just not something you want your kids to see,” mom Natosha Wallace told 5 On Your Side.
Doctor John’s Lingerie and Novelty Boutique has taken over the space of an old Dairy Queen across from the public library and Victory Church St. Louis in Cahokia, Illinois.
"Is it most conducive? It has the potential not to be,” the church’s presiding elder, Dwayne Cotton, said.
The Village of Cahokia said the business applied and has not yet been approved for a license, but its merchandise already hangs in the windows.
A code violation on the door said those windows need to be covered at least until that license gets approved.
While some in Cahokia said they believe the store’s location is inappropriate, Cotton said he’s going to practice what he preaches.
"We are not going to judge them,” he said.
Instead, he views the new neighbor as a new opportunity "to minister to anybody who visits that establishment, so we look at it in a very positive light,” he said.
The Director of Operations for the Doctor John’s adult store chain tells 5 On Your Side this location is not connected to them, even though it has the same name.
