Over 100 kids to be removed from district’s fastest growing school

"It's disappointing, he loves his teachers. Loves his friends. It's a warm, familiar place."

WENTZVILLE, Mo. – Parents are outraged over a big change coming to the Wentzville School District.

More than a hundred kids going to one elementary school will have to move to a different school next fall.

Thursday, the school board approved proposed boundary adjustments with a vote of five to one.

Christine Romstad's son is a kindergartner at Discovery Ridge Elementary School.

“It's disappointing,” Romstad said. “He loves his teachers. Loves his friends. It's a warm, familiar place."

She says it only takes around 10 minutes to get to school from their house. Plus, his big sister goes to Frontier Middle School, which is next door to Discovery Ridge.

"We actually didn't sell our house so that both of our kids would stay in these particular schools,” Romstad said.

At the start of the 2018 school year, Romstad's daughter will get to stay at Frontier. However, her son, and around 150 other students who currently attend Discovery Ridge, will be moving to Prairie View Elementary.

"The bus ride for them could be anywhere from up to 50 minutes,” Romstad said.

The district said Discovery Ridge is its fastest growing school and students living in the Briarchase, Sommers Landing, and Belmont subdivisions have to switch to Prairie View.

Romstad said the street behind her house is technically a different subdivision. Kids living there will be allowed to continue at Discovery Ridge.

"They're basically just kind of yanking us out of the middle and away from my kids' friends," Romstad said.

Several parents asked the school board to reconsider.

"The fact that Discovery Ridge is ranked 75th in the state and this other school is ranked 451st, I'm not sure if we can do it,” Romstad said.

The last time the district switched up the boundaries was just last year when 300 students were removed from the school.
