Police To Parents: Don't Tell Your Kids We'll Haul Them Off To Jail

The Greensboro Police Department is telling parents NOT to tell their kids officers will haul them off to jail if they're bad.

It's a national campaign and it's one the Greensboro Police Department is pushing into our community.

The department is telling parents NOT to tell their kids officers will haul them off to jail if they're bad.

And it's one the Greensboro Police Department is pushing into our community.

Latasha Rodriguez wants to teach her four-year-old daughter, Jahlina, right from wrong.

"But she's still trying to understand everything, she'll take things that are not hers and I try to let her know," Rodriguez says. "That's stealing, you could get in trouble the cops will come get you."

But it's that phrase that also sends another message.

"Sometimes they don't understand if you're just saying that or if you really mean it," explains E.Y. Watkins, Media Relations Officer with the Greensboro Police Department. "But we want kids to come to us if they're in trouble at any point so if they're scared of us of course they won't come and sometimes it could be the difference between getting them help and not getting them help."

It's all part of building a positive public image - one that starts with the younger generation and trickles into the communities.

"We couldn't do our job without the public and that's what the public needs to understand," explains Watkins. "We need them in order to do our job because we don't know what's going on in a neighborhood unless they call us and let us know."

"I try to let her know that not all officers are bad," Rodriguez shares. "She does watch the news and she sees bad things happening she kind of thinks that cops are bad. So I try to let her know. Not all cops are bad, just some things happen I guess."

But this message and community engagement are good places to start.

"I know she sees it sometimes in Facebook stories about cops interacting with children and things like that so I think if she saw that more she'd probably feel more comfortable around them."

A better message to tell kids?

The Greensboro Police Department wants parents to tell kids if they're lost, hurt or in trouble, they can always ask an officer for help.
