Security improved at Dome, but questions remain

Officials at the Dome at America's Center told us they would make changes, so we put their word to the test.

ST. LOUIS – Earlier this month 5 On Your Side told you about a lack of security at the Dome at America’s Center. When we brought these concerns to the arena, they told us they would make changes.

We put their word to the test and sent Reporter Jenn Sullivan and Photojournalist Kenny Koger to the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Saturday.

People outside the Dome said they were impressed with the security.

“It’s been great to see all the police presence and security presence,” Brittany Brock said.

Her husband, Michael Brock, said “Security is good. There’s been a lot of people out.”

Outside the Dome in downtown St. Louis, thousands of people were wanded before heading to the Monster Energy AMA Supercross on St. Patrick’s Day. It was a vast difference from earlier this month where there was zero security at Monster Jam. Tracey Kathcart didn’t mind the longer lines to get in.

"It takes longer to get in but whatever it takes for people’s safety,” she said.

Reporter Jenn Sullivan placed a bottle of water and a Go-Pro inside her bag before going to the event. Both items are listed on the Dome’s “Prohibited Items” list on their website. When Koger and Sullivan entered the Dome, both of them were wanded. But security personnel only briefly checked Sullivan’s bag. Security found her bottled water, but that was it.

Administrators with the Dome declined an on-camera interview about security but before we came over, they did send us this statement:

“We always work closely with law enforcement officials to ensure the safety of guests at The Dome for large ticketed events. We will be using metal detection devices and bag checks for Supercross and other events of this scope.”

When we brought our concerns to the Director of Communications for the Dome, Tony Paraino, he emailed this: "I will share this with our security team and the vendor providing these services. Again, we have numerous security measures in place…The specifics of those efforts are kept confidential for security reasons."
