PEVELY, Mo. – Helping fellow students and friends at Hillsboro High School.

That is how Ethan Schlegel remembered his friend Cody Dowd, 18 of Pevely.

Dowd was killed in a multi-car crash in the Southbound lanes of Interstate 55 Saturday night near Imperial.

It started with a two-car crash.

Dowd and others were on the side of the interstate when a third vehicle hit the stopped cars. One of the cars hit and killed Dowd and injured four others.

"Never in a million years thought this would happen," said his friend Ethan Schlegel.

Schlegel woke up Sunday morning to the sad news. Immediately, high school memories came flooding back.

And as the sun sets on a life gone too soon, the kind memories shine brightly.

"He just cared a lot about people. He was a very caring person," Schlegel said.

Dowd was attending Jefferson College studying culinary arts. There's no word on when memorial services might be held.
