Transgender community remembers lives lost to violence

Community members said murder, suicides and narrow-minded hate are major issues the transgender community must overcome in this country on a daily basis.

ST. LOUIS – Monday marks the Transgender Day of Remembrance, but dozens of people honored it Sunday evening.

Community members said murder, suicides and narrow-minded hate are major issues the transgender community must overcome in this country on a daily basis.

Sunday, they called out the names of 25 trans people who lost their lives to violence, just this year alone in the U.S. and decorated stones with messages of hope and the names of people who were murdered for being transgender.

Metropolitan Community Church of Greater Saint Louis, TransParent and other major organizations held the ceremony tonight at Ethical Society of St. Louis.

Organizers said they want to bring awareness to ongoing concerns in the trans community, including violence, housing and work discrimination.

Participants stood together as a community to memorialize and honor life at the ceremony. A candlelight ceremony will also be held Monday night at the Courtyard Marriott in St. Peters.
