Troy IL working to fix brown water issue

The city has not called for a boil order, but they are asking residents to refrain from doing laundry while the problem is ongoing.

The Troy, Illinois, public works department is working on a fix after residents reported brown water coming from their taps.

According to a message from the public works department, the issue was caused by a filter valve malfunction at the water treatment plant. The department said they are flushing the system in an attempt to clean up the water, but they said the brown water may continue for the next 24 hours. Residents are asked to refrain from doing laundry while the condition is ongoing.

As of now, the public works department said this is not a boil order, and the department is following the suggestions of the Illinois EPA.

According to the department, the water issue is caused by excessive iron and manganese.
