At least two people died Friday morning in what authorities are calling a murder-suicide at Joint Base San Antonio - Lackland.

At least two people died Friday morning in what authorities are calling a murder-suicide at Joint Base San Antonio - Lackland. The AP is reporting that the victim was a commanding officer of a K-9 training squadron who was shot and killed by one of his airmen.

The report of an active shooter in the Medina Training Annex was received by emergency officials at 8:30 a.m. Friday and quickly prompted a lockdown of the entire base and numerous nearby schools.

The lockdown of the base, Allen and Valley Hi Elementary Schools and Rayburn Middle School were all lifted by 10:15 a.m.

In a news conference late Friday morning, Brig. Gen. Robert D. LaBrutta said the response by forces on base and local law enforcement and the FBI was "outstanding."

"This morning, we received one of those calls you never want to receive," said LaBrutta, who serves as commander of the 502nd Air Base Wing and Joint Base San Antonio. "The response to this tragic event was overwhelming and was absolutely outstanding. We got to the facility in question in three minutes."

LaBrutta confirmed that both of the victims were male, but he was not able to confirm their identities.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the families that are going to be affected by this tragedy," LaBrutta said.

According to initial internal Pentagon communications obtained by the Air Force Times, the commanding officer of a training squadron at the base was shot by an airman. Authorities on base were not able to confirm those details.

The FBI and base authorities were continuing the investigation.
