5 things you need to know Tuesday

Presidential race moves to 'Amtrak primaries'

Some pundits have dubbed it "Amtrak primary" day: All eyes will be looking East in the presidential race Tuesday as Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island hold their primaries for both parties. (All states served, of course, by Amtrak.) Front-runners Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are expecting wins in several states, especially Pennsylvania, which carries the day's biggest delegate haul. Trump's Republican rivals Ted Cruz and John Kasich are looking past the Northeast and have teamed up to stop Trump in Indiana on May 3 and in other states.

Chernobyl, world's worst nuclear disaster, turns 30

On April 26, 1986, an explosion destroyed reactor No. 4 at Chernobyl nuclear plant in the former Soviet Union. The reactor burned for two weeks, discharging the largest-ever uncontrolled amount of radioactive material and killing a still-unknown number of people. Thirty years later, 5 million still live on contaminated lands in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, and hundreds of thousands are sick or suffering. USA TODAY's special report on Chernobyl looks at the people living in the shadow of the world's worst nuclear disaster.

Will she be all smiles? Ripa to return to work

Kelly Ripa will return to ABC's Live with Kelly and Michael on Tuesday, her first day back since leaving the show last week in an alleged blowup over co-host Michael Strahan's departure to the network's Good Morning America. Ripa reportedly was upset that she was informed of the news of Strahan's exit only minutes before it was announced publicly. Meanwhile, speculation continues over Strahan's replacement.

Prosecutors expected to announce Johnny Manziel indictment

Dallas prosecutors are expected to announce Tuesday that former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel has been indicted on a misdemeanor assault charge for an incident with his ex-girlfriend during a night out in January. Colleen Crowley, Manziel's former girlfriend, alleges Manziel accosted her at a Dallas hotel and later struck her when they drove back to her apartment in Fort Worth. Manziel, who was waived by the Browns in March and subsequently dropped by two agents, could face the possibility of one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

All eyes on iPhone sales

Investors will learn how steeply iPhone sales have dropped when Apple reports quarterly earnings after the markets close Tuesday. Apple historically racks up comparatively modest sales during the first three months of the year, after a blockbuster holiday season. Back in January, Apple CEO Tim Cook warned revenue for the second quarter was on the decline, based on slow growth of the iPhone. Apple launched the smaller iPhone SE last month to spark new interest in the device.
