NEW YORK (AP) — Oakland Athletics infielder Eric Sogard undergone surgery on his left knee on Wednesday.

Sogard, who started 87 games at second base last year, went on the disabled list with a cervical strain at the end of spring training. He began an injury rehabilitation assignment early last week with Class A Stockton and started two games but has not played since last Wednesday.

Sogard went to Florida to be examined by Dr. James Andrews, who performed a patellar tendon debridement procedure. The infielder is resting comfortably and will return to Oakland on Friday, the team said.

The operation likely will sideline Sogard at least another six weeks.

Sogard, a .239 career hitter in six major league seasons, also made 14 starts at shortstop last season and one at third base. He batted .247 with a homer and 37 RBIs.
