CW enrolls in 'Riverdale' High with live-action Archie series

CW will follow Archie Andrews to Riverdale, a new live-action series, one of three newcomers ordered by the network Thursday for next season, along with CBS export Supergirl

Riverdale, an early favorite for a pickup, is described by the network as a "surprising and subversive" take on the iconic gang of Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead, full of small-town surrealism. It's set in the present day and hails from executive producer Greg Berlanti, a dominant presence on the network with Arrow, The Flash, DC's Legends of Tomorrow and, now, Supergirl

Cole Sprouse (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody) will play Archie, and the cast also includes grownups Luke Perry and Madchen Amick (Twin Peaks).

Other new series are:

  • Frequency, a remake of the 2000 film about a police detective who can communicate with her father, who died 20 years ago, as they work on an unsolved murder case. Riley Smith stars.
  • No Tomorrow stars Tori Anderson as a manager at an Amazon-like company who falls for an eternal optimist (Josh Sasse, Galavant) who lives life to the fullest because he's convinced the apocalypse is near. The show seems likely to share a night with returning Jane the Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girfriend in a rotation.

The network has renewed all of its scripted series from this season except spring replacement Containment, which has done well and could still come back.
