Facebook 'safety check' erroneously sent after Pakistan explosion

"Are you OK?"

"Are you affected by the explosion?" the message reads, in part.

"Are you OK?"

Many Facebook users are reporting having received such a message following a suspected suicide bombing Sunday in Lahore, Pakistan. The problem is, those users are outside the affected area.

At least 60 people were killed and 300 people wounded, according to the USA Today. The area where the bomb went off reportedly was crowded with Christians and families celebrating the Easter holiday.

Facebook automatically sends its users a "Safety Check" if it determines the person is near a disaster area. The user can tap the "I'm safe" button or reply as "SAFE" to let their friends and family know.

"Are you affected by the explosion? Reply SAFE if you're ok or OUT if you aren't in the area," the message reads.

Following the explosion in Pakistan, Facebook users worldwide on Twitter say they've received the message -- including those across the U.S.

In a statement to Gawker, a Facebook spokesperson said the feature was improperly sent:

“We have activated Safety Check in Lahore. We apologize to anyone who mistakenly received a notification outside of Pakistan and are working to resolve the issue.”
