NTT Data to buy Dell IT services for $3.1 billion

NTT Data of Japan has agreed to acquire Dell's information technology consulting division for a reported $3.1 billion.

Acquired by Dell from Perot Services for $3.9 billion in 2009, Dell Services provides tech consulting for health care and insurance industries. The sale of the Dell Services division is part of Dell's strategy to sell some non-core assets as part of its $60 billion-plus deal to acquire storage and software maker EMC Corp.

NTT Data, a division of Tokyo-based telecom company Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp., announced the acquisition in a statement to the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Monday for the equivalent of $3.055 billion, according to Bloomberg. Dell confirmed that the deal is for more than $3 billion. NTT Data did not a date for when the deal would be completed.

The acquisition helps NTT Data expand its reach into the U.S. “Welcoming Dell Services to NTT Data is expected to strengthen our leadership position in the IT Services market and initiates an important business relationship with Dell," said Toshio Iwamoto, President and CEO of NTT Data Corp., in a statement.

Back in October, Dell announced its bid to acquire storage hardware and software maker EMC, which includes cloud software company VMWare. EMC shareholders are expected to vote on the deal in May, which would allow for its completion by October.

The Round Rock, Texas-based Dell, which went private three years ago, has been seeking to sell software companies Quest Software and SonicWall for up to $4 billion, according to Reuters, in preparation for the EMC merger.
