The campaign spokesman for Senate candidate Roy Moore was stupefied Tuesday when he was told that members of Congress do not need to be sworn in with a Bible when taking their oaths of office.
Spokesman Ted Crockett said the Alabama Republican, who is facing Democrat Doug Jones in Tuesday's special election, didn't think Muslims should be allowed to serve in Congress because "you have to swear on the Bible" to be an elected official in America.
CNN's Jake Tapper was quick to correct Crockett.
Here's the exchange:
Tapper: Uh. You don't have to actually swear on a Christian Bible. You can swear on anything. I don't know if you knew that.
Crockett: Ohh no, I swore on the Bible, I done it three times.
Tapper: I'm sure you have, I'm sure you picked a bible, but the law is not that you have to swear on a Christian bible. That is not the law. You don't know that?
Crockett was then speechless, his mouth agape.
After a few seconds, Crockett cut in: "I know that Donald Trump did it when we made him president. "
Tapper replied, "Because he picked it, because he is a Christian."
