Verify: The Benghazi debate at the RNC

CLEVELAND - One of the most emotional parts of the first night of the Republican National Convention came when Pat Smith, the mother of Sean Smith, who was one of the four people killed in the Benghazi attack, said she blames Hillary Clinton personally for her son’s death.

Smith also implied that Clinton is damaging her reputation by calling her a "liar."

This needs some context.

Smith says that Clinton told her that her son’s death was caused by backlash over a video that angered Islamic fundamentalists instead of what it was, a planned terrorist attack.

Clinton did not use the word “liar” to describe Smith, but during a primary debate on CNN, she did say Smith is wrong.

"I certainly can’t even imagine the grief that she has for losing her son. But she’s wrong. She’s absolutely wrong," Clinton said.

Fact-checkers have worked on this claim before.

Some families agree with the Smith, saying Clinton mentioned the video. Others say she didn’t.

It’s unprovable. We don’t have any recordings of those private conversations.

During Smith's speech, viewers on Fox News heard Trump in a telephone interview, where Trump appeared to take some credit for the convention being here in Cleveland.

“I wanted it to be in Ohio. I recommended it be in Ohio," Trump said.

But, the RNC picked Cleveland about a year before Trump even got in the race.

We looked, and we can’t find any public record of Trump pushing for this event to be here before the choice was made.
