Behind Mikolas' shut out, Cards oust Royals 6-0

The biggest wildcard in the Cardinals’ rotation when this season began was Miles Mikolas, coming back to the major leagues after three years in Japan.

Could he match the success here that he had there? Nobody knew.

Two months into the season, it’s becoming more and more apparent with every start that the answer is yes.

Mikolas recorded his first shutout on Monday night, limiting the Royals to four hits, and improved his record to 6-0 with three no-decisions in his nine starts. Over the last seven, he has allowed a total of eight runs in 48 1/3 innings, an ERA of 1.49.

He also struck out a career-high nine batters on Monday night and did not walk a batter until there were two outs in the ninth inning. For the season he has issued only six walks in 60 1/3 innings.

5 things we learned from the Cardinals' 6-0 win over the Royals

The old adage still holds strong: a good team's job is to take care of bad teams. "Breaks in the schedule" allow a playoff contender to pad the record and gain some confidence. After a difficult week involving some Minnesota Twins defeats and Philadelphia Phillies comebacks, the St. Louis Cardinals have hit a stride in the past couple days.

Don't it a comeback or even a winning streak, but the Cardinals have outscored the competition 11-1 the past two days and put themselves back on track for a happy ending. They've used elite pitching, timely hitting, and a few surprises to pull it off, and the good times continued on Monday at Busch Stadium as the Birds mowed over the Kansas City Royals, 6-0.

Let's talk about it, shall we?
