Outfielder Matt Holliday has been placed on the 15-day disabled list after fracturing his thumb during Thursday night's game. The 15 days are retroactive to Friday.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals have purchased the contract of rookie right-handed pitcher Luke Weaver.
The 22-year-old has made 38 career minor league starts, holding a 15-9 record with a 1.78 ERA over 197.2 innings pitched. In those starts, he has struck out 192 batters while allowing just 35 walks.
Weaver is a native of DeLand, Fla. and attended Florida State University. He was a first-round draft pick by the Cardinals in 2014.
He will make his major league debut at Wrigley Field as the starting pitcher for Saturday's 1:20 game against the Cubs.
He will wear number 62.
