School gives Jaylon McKenzie’s mom his cap and gown at 8th grade graduation

EAST. ST. LOUIS, Ill. – At 14 years old, he was a standout football player who had already gained national attention. His life was cut short when he was shot and killed at a post-prom party in May in Venice, Illinois.

Jaylon McKenzie would have graduated from eighth grade last weekend.

Jaylon’s mom, Sukenna, shared with 5 On Your Side’s Justina Coronel, the school gave her his cap and gown and put it on her at the end of the ceremony. She said it was an emotional moment for her.

Police have still not caught the person who shot and killed McKenzie.

Anyone who witnessed the shooting or has any knowledge of the shooting is asked to contact the ISP Investigations Case Agent Scott Wobbe at 618-381-1467. Callers can remain anonymous.
