Sister Act - Malone Duo Hopes Rio is in the Cards

KAGS News at 10 - 6/28/16

Fresh off finishing first and third respectively in the javelin at the NCAA Championships, Texas A&M sisters Maggie and Audrey Malone have now turned their attention to next week's US Olympic Team Trials for track and field. With a strong showing in Eugene, Oregon the Malone sisters hope they can continue on to the Summer Olympics in Rio.

Housing two of the top three javelin throwers in the NCAA is already cause for celebration at Texas A&M. So you can imagine how it felt for sisters Maggie and Audrey Malone to finish 1st and 3rd respectively at the NCAA Championships earlier this month.

"Oh my gosh it was unreal," said Maggie Malone. "Like my sister and I were saying it never sunk in. Like it still hasn't really sunk in."

The Geneva, Nebraska natives are separated by just two years and had a close but competitive bond as kids.

"Both of our parents are coaches and we shared a room for 18 years so we know each other pretty well," said Maggie. "We're our biggest supporters, we're our biggest competitors."

"It's kind of hard finding your own way especially as the little sister because you're Maggie's little sister," said Audrey Malone. But she would always push me to be my best and be like you're not me, i'm not you. So lets play to our strengths and we mesh really well together."

Older sister Maggie took home the collegiate title with an NCAA record throw of 204 feet. But she is pretty new to the javelin. Malone picked it up as a freshman at A&M and has already progressed into one of the favorites in the event at the US Olympic Trials. Though there's high expectations for her, Malone finds it easy to keep a level head.

"A lot of my teammates like Shamier (Little) and Shelbi (Vaughn) and Lindon (Victor), they've always been on World teams or USA teams and I've never been on that stage," Maggie said. So going into it I see myself as an underdog and just keep my head down and keep working and keep doing what i've been doing all season. Hopefully it's going to take care of itself."

Training with your sister everyday isn't always peaches and cream. But even though there are some rough patches, the Malone sisters are committed to helping each other.

"It's definitely a struggle some days," Audrey said. "At the beginning sometimes when we know that both of us are having a bad day we'll either know to say something or not to say something depending on the mood. But we'll throw little things in there, hey I saw this in your throw, hey I saw this in your throw."

And after both finishing on the podium at the NCAA Championships, getting a trip to Rio together would be the icing on the cake.

"I don't know if two sisters in the same event have ever made it to the OIympics at the same time so I think that would be wonderful," said Audrey.

"We're both kind of going into it just keeping our heads down, doing what we can do," said Maggie. But if both of us made it my parents would freak out."

The Malone sisters will compete in the javelin at the US Olympic Trials starting July 7th.
