A kitten is safe after finding its way into a storm sewer, thanks to Maplewood firefighters.
On Tuesday, a kitten was trapped in a small sewer line below the street surface and only accessible through a manhole cover. Firefighters are trained in advanced confined rescue procedures and quickly put their skills to work to get the kitten out safely.
A resident in the area took the kitten to local veterinarian who determined “Smokey” was healthy.
Smokey was rescued shortly before it started to rain, the fire department said a delay in the rescue could have caused Smokey to drown if the sewer filled with rainwater.
