Mercedes Mackay is a multi-skilled journalist and weekend co-anchor of "Today in St. Louis" at 5 On Your Side in St. Louis, Missouri.
Mercedes came to 5 On Your Side in June 2022 from KSDK sister station KTHV in Little Rock, Arkansas.
A native of Sugar Land, Texas, Mercedes grew up in a house that always had the local news on TV.
“Whether it was before going to school or before we ate dinner, the news was always on,” said Mercedes. “From a young age, I knew it was a valued part of the community, but it wasn’t until I got older that I realized what I wanted to do.”
By high school, she had narrowed her journalism focus to sports reporting. By her senior year, she decided to make the switch to news reporting. She says she loves getting to learn a new subject each day and becoming an expert on it within eight hours.
She attended the University of Missouri Columbia’s School of Journalism and earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism with a minor in business. During college, Mercedes made lots of friends from the St. Louis area, and knew coming here would be an easy transition.
“KSDK has an incredibly long history of being the legacy station in St. Louis, and it was a no-brainer to want to work beside the incredible journalists who have paved the way here,” said Mercedes. “Most importantly, I love serving the community and getting to meet new incredible people daily.”
Some of her most memorable career moments to date include covering presidential rallies, Razorback games, and high-profile court cases.
