Kohn's Kosher Meat and Deli has closed its doors until further notice

Kohn's Kosher Meat and Deli had been selling kosher foods since 1963.

ST. LOUIS — Kohn's Kosher Meat and Deli, the only independent kosher butcher in the St. Louis area, has closed its doors until further notice.

Posted to Kohn's website was a July 9 statement from the Vaad Hoeir of St. Louis, which provides kosher certification, saying the restaurant and deli had closed its doors last week. The statement said the Vaad Hoeir and kosher community were "distressed at the circumstances that led to the closing" but did not say what led to the butcher's closure.

"Vaad is acutely aware of the need in St. Louis for fresh kosher meat, kosher catering, and a kosher restaurant," the post read. "Individuals are working to make all of that available, perhaps by reopening Kohn's, and the Vaas has done everything it can to support these efforts."

The post said they are hopeful to announce good news early next week but did not go into detail what that may be.

The establishment had been selling kosher foods since 1963. In addition to its fully kosher store, it offered a deli counter, bakery and dining area.

Kohn's Kosher Meat and Deli was founded by Simon and Bobbi Kohn before their children Lenny Kohn and Rosemary Cooper entered the business in the 1970s.

The business was put on the market in March 2022 and was sold months later to two New York-based silent partners, according to the St. Louis Business Journal
