Carousel horses, jukeboxes and a Tommy Gun: Repertory Theatre holds 1st-of-its-kind prop sale

The Rep is clearing out 12,000+ square feet of storage and giving the public a chance to shop eclectic props from its stage productions.

ST. LOUIS — Carousel horses, pink flamingos, jukeboxes, sewing machines, a cheetah-print luggage set and a prop Tommy Gun in a violin case: These are just some of the eclectic items up for grabs this week at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis' inaugural prop sale.

Throughout its more than 50+ years of stage productions, The Rep has acquired over 12,000+ square feet of theatrical prop storage. To clear room for more props, it is giving antique lovers and theater buffs the chance to take some home.

The prop sale will run from June 26-29 at the Lemp Brewery Warehouse, located at 3500 Lemp Ave. The sale will be open to the public from noon to 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Numbers will be handed out a half-hour before the start time each day.

"We are going to be making room for the next 50 to 60 years of props for the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis," Danny Williams, Managing Director for The Rep said.

Theatre organizers say the prop sale is the first of its kind. Organizers say the facility holds props that are lent to places like The Muny, local schools and colleges and now the warehouse is bursting at the seams and they want to make more room for their newer props.

"We're very lucky to be part of the arts community here in St. Louis, we have one of the best arts communities in the Midwest, if not the country, and we love being a part of our community. We share resources, whether that be lending props, or costumes. We give and we take. The Muny, The Tennessee Williams festival, they're all part of this really wonderful theater ecosystem here in St. Louis," Williams said.

All sales are final, and the props are being sold in "as is" condition, according to a release from The Rep. Cash and credit card payments are preferred.

Items must be removed from the warehouse on the day of purchase, and no items will be held without full payment, according to the theatre.

The Rep says they worked with Pennies In Your Pocket, an estate company to help tag items at fair prices. The money made will be used to help continue to put on shows for the St. Louis community.
