St. Louis native Sterling K. Brown receives his 1st Oscar nomination

Sterling K. Brown is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "American Fiction."

ST. LOUIS — The nominees for the 96th Academy Awards were announced Tuesday, and among them is an actor with St. Louis roots.

Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor Sterling K. Brown received his first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in "American Fiction." He's up against four legendary actors: Robert De Niro for "Killers of the Flower Moon," Robert Downey Jr. for "Oppenheimer," Ryan Gosling for "Barbie" and Mark Ruffalo for "Poor Things."

Born in St. Louis, Brown has been critically praised for his performances in TV shows like NBC's "This Is Us," FX's "American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson" and Amazon Prime's "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" as well as in movies like "Black Panther" and "Marshall."

In May, he delivered the 2024 commencement address to graduating students at Washington University and received an honorary doctor of fine arts degree for his accomplishments.

"American Fiction" received five nominations from the Academy, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Score and - of course - Best Supporting Actor. According to the film's website, the R-rated comedy centers on a Black writer fed up with society's obsession with reducing people to racial stereotypes and profiting from "Black" entertainment. To prove a point, he uses a pen name to write an "outlandish Black book of his own."

The Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will air Sunday, March 10 on ABC.

Brown isn't the only St. Louis native up for a major award this year. Music producer Metro Boomin is nominated for Best Rap Album and Producer of the Year, Non-Classical at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards.
