'Jeopardy!' contestants stumped by question about St. Louis-based brand

Would you have answered it correctly?

ST. LOUIS — The contestants on a recent "Jeopardy!" episode were stumped by a question about an iconic St. Louis-based brand.

The episode, which aired Tuesday on 5 On Your Side, featured contestants Kathy Davis from North Manchester, Indiana; Anna Paone from Sunnyside, New York; and returning champion Isaac Hirsch from Burbank, California.

During the "Double Jeopardy!" Round, Hirsch chose "A Shapely Category" for $800.

The answer: "Now part of Nestlé, this pet food brand is headquartered at Checkerboard Square in St. Louis, on a campus with 3 dog parks."

All three contestants were stumped, unable to respond before time ran out.

The correct response: "What is … Purina?"

According to Nestlé, Purina's history in the city of St. Louis dates back more than 130 years. Before its name changed to Purina, and Ralston Purina before that, the company was known as the Robinson-Danforth Commission Company. It manufactured horse and mule food and initially gained exposure at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. From there, the company grew.

Nestlé purchased Ralston Purina in 2001, and the brand then became known as Nestlé Purina.
